Chapter Seventeen

When 9:00 pm arrived, Lisa excused herself and Johnny from the table.

“What? Are you kidding me?” Champ shrieked. “No one’s won the pot yet.”

“That’s okay. Here. Share these however you want.” She slid the massive pile of chips toward the center of the table. “We have to head out.”

“All right, all right. We’re walking away with something special tonight, aren’t we?”

“And your friend’s not bad at lying,” Harold added.

“Not bad?” Johnny scoffed. “Try amazin’. I can lie my way outta almost anythin’ you set in front of me. Ask Lisa. She’ll tell you the same.”

The bald Wood Elf chuckled. “I have no idea what you said but it was nice having you here.”

“You see that kid of yours anytime soon, Lisa, you tell him I said hi,” Champ called.

The much better mood that had filled her for the last hour dampened slightly and she swallowed. “I will. See ya.”

The hounds followed them through the door of the back room and looked over their shoulders as the old magicals spun the wheel again. “I don’t get it, Rex. All that work and no one even gets a treat.”

“They probably stopped eating a long time ago.”

“Yeah. Smells like it.”

The door closed behind them and the front room of Happy’s held only five more patrons than when they’d arrived. Murray nodded at them from behind the bar before he leaned forward to hear his newest customer’s drink order.

“Okay. Tell me you didn’t have fun with that.”

Johnny tilted his head from side to side. “I can’t say that.”

“Oh, come on.”

“But I didn’t not have fun.” He smiled at her. “It’s one hell of a way to make your troubles seem smaller in comparison.”

“I told you. Thanks for stepping out of your comfort zone for a while. I had no idea how much I needed that.”

“All right, well, we ain’t makin’ this a regular Saturday night pastime.”

Her smile faded a little. “No. It’s not a regular thing for us, huh? Hey, unless Murray knows where to get one of those wheels and the lie detector. We could—”

“Uh-uh. Nope. I aim to focus on the good I have instead of tryin’ to pit shitty against shittier. I ain’t bringin’ one of those back home with us, darlin’. That’s simply askin’ for too much trouble— Hey. What’s wrong?”

She had stopped and now stared at the entrance to Happy’s at the end of the long hall from the alley. “I only…”

Johnny turned to see a woman’s massive figure filling the entryway. She must have been at least six and a half feet tall and took up almost the entire doorway with both her height and girth. Her gray hair was pulled into a tight bun, and while she wore heavy, multi-layered skirts, thick snow boots, and an expensive-looking peacoat of pure gray wool against the February cold, something more than a little dangerous glinted behind her eyes. Her lower lip depressed slightly in two places where what looked like small upper fangs made divots in the skin. Those became craters when the giant woman’s smile widened.
